Damage survey with 3D laser scan

Damage survey with 3D laser scan

The 3D laser scan technique used for a number of retrofits and conversions has been also successfully used to assess the extent of structural damages and the energy absorption in case of collisions and other circumstances. The picture shows the point cloud of a ship which capsized in drydock due to a failure of the side bottom blocks and this representation was used to assess the grounding reaction force which was necessary to design suitable anticapsizing devices and to refloating operations.

M/V Stainless Princess grounding

M/V Stainless Princess grounding

Interprogetti Genova surveyed the vessel on spot on behalf of the Hull and Machinery Underwriters to ascertain the nature and the extent of damage thus for was involved in the grounding of the M/V Stainless Princess off the cost of Korea. As a result, the chemical cargo was lost at sea and the ship which broke in three pieces was declared beyond repairs

The ship collided off Portugal cost and water flooded into cargo holds through the damage collision bulkhead causing progressive collapsing of transversal bulkheads. Luckily, the fourth bulkhead was purposely designed as ballast tank bulkhead and did not fail allowing salvors to tranship cargo into another vessel and to tow the ship into a safe port.

On behalf of the Hull and Machinery Underwriters Interprogetti Genova surveyed the ship and highlighted that the failure of forward transversal cargo hold bulkheads was not related to corrosion, as initially maintained by cargo interests, but it was the result of inherent weakness of the same. Indeed, the subsequent IACS retroactive requirements dealing with the strengthening of transversal bulkheads are the evidence that this damage was typical on many ships built on the basis of the old regulations which required the transversal bulkheads to withstand lateral loads induced by cargoes having specific gravity not greater than 0.7 t/m3.

The ship suffered a main engine crankshaft break down while crossing Atlantic and completed the sea passage setting canvas convers on the ship gears as sails. Interprogetti Genova, acting on behalf of the Hull and Machinery Underwriters, through suitable metallurgical investigations carried out at LR facilities in London (Croydon) demonstrated that the cause of damage was related to an incorrect repair work carried out on the main engine crankshaft few weeks before the occurrence.

Crane installation on board of M/V Romano P

Crane installation on board of M/V Romano P

Design of the installation of an E-crane weighting some 1000 tons on a barge for transhipping of grain. The job included a stability assessment of the barge and a structural assessment. Additionally, a seakeeping analysis has been carried out to determine the dynamic loads during transfer voyages in open seas for the purpose of sizing crane wind-bracing against capsizing.

Interprogetti Genova has been dealing with the design of new builds and conversions of a wide range of ships such as self-discharging bulk carriers, floating transhipment terminals, livestock carriers, tugs, oil & chemical tankers, ro-ro cargo, ro-ro pax, passenger ships, yachts, barges, offshore units, etc. Click here and discover more design and engineering work.
Design of self-elevating unit

Design of self-elevating unit

This unit is designed for the maintenance of the floodgate of Venice (MOSE). She is arranged in three independent modules, connectable one to each other in two different configurations, short & long according to the size of different floodgates.

LIFTING & TRANSPORTATION OF A 650t SHORE CRANE FROM GENOA TO LEGHORN

LIFTING & TRANSPORTATION OF A 650t SHORE CRANE FROM GENOA TO LEGHORN

Interprogetti Genova was appointed to design the lifting, sea fastening and transportation of a 650 t shore crane. The lifting pad eyes were fitted on the legs of the crane and this required detailed strength analysis of the crane structures during lifting operations.
